10/17/18 We Have Many Reasons to "A-door" our Supporters

This past week our new back door was installed.  The old door had been damaged when the library was broken in to on Aug. 31st.  When word of the burglary was made public, the offers of help and support came in quickly.  Michelle & Ted MacHugo offered to pay for a new back door.  Kevin Denson, of Dalton Lumber, ordered the door for us and keyed the new locks.  And Orlan Lambrecht, a local contractor,  picked the door up and donated his time to install it.  Now that the new door is in we will use a donation from a local businessman, who wishes to remain anonymous, to replace the TV and DVD player.    And before the end of the year we hope to have a new security system installed.  Many thanks to all our donors!  We do truly "A-door" you!
Fall means it is time for the Battle of the Books, which the Markesan Schools participate in. The statewide Battle of the Books program is designed to promote a love of reading among students. It encourages them to read a variety of books and remember information about the plots, characters, and settings of the books. Every question asked in a battle is answered by the title and author of the book and takes the form of: Name the book in which a horse and a boy are stranded on an island. It is a fun, academic-based competition that has been very successful in school districts throughout the state in encouraging students to read.  We try to keep a set of books available at all times, that are on the list for the competition, so if a student can't get a copy at school, or forgets to bring a book home for the weekend, they can check out a copy here.
Our last display has been taken down and we are looking for new people who have a collection to showcase, or a hobby they want to show off.  In the past we have had a wide variety of displays:  ice cream scoops,  bird houses, emergency vehicles, hats, a Laura Ingalls Wilder collection to mention a few.  If you have a wonderful collection or unique hobby, and would like to display it for a month, give the library a call today.
