Bob Burdick of Marquette, nicknamed Bob the Builder by friends and family, has loaned the Library some of his scroll saw and intarsia woodworking projects.
The word "Intarsia" was one I had never heard before so if any of the rest of you are wondering what it means here is the definition...Intarsia is a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain pattern and color (but can involve the use of stains and dyes) to create variations in the pattern. After selecting the specific woods to be used within the pattern, each piece is then individually cut, shaped, and finished. Sometimes areas of the pattern are raised to create more depth. Once the individual pieces are complete, they are fitted together like a jig-saw puzzle and glued. The Dragon that is in the display has 175 pieces, and the Phoenix Bird has 161 pieces in it.
Bob took a woodworking class in High School and has been doing it ever since then. He enjoys the work immensely and when asked if he sells his work he replied that usually he donates them to various groups and clubs. He has been making the confirmation students of St. Paul's Church, Marquette, different styles of crosses for years. He's also made triangular casket flag holders and donated them to the American Legion Post in Kingston to present to the family as a keepsake for their loved ones flag. Those are just 2 of the many places that have received donations. The display will be up until mid-November so the next time you are in the library take a peek.
